Cascade Gravel Grinder
Three Day Omnium Format - Race/Ride One, Two or All Three Days
The Cascade Gravel Grinder is one of the most scenic and diverse gravel events in the country. Located in Bend, Oregon the event will provide three days of amazing rides through the Central Oregon high desert and Cascade Mountain Range. Bend is home to thousands of miles of remote gravel roads were deer out number cars 10 to 1. All three days of riding offer different scenery and challenges. April is a great time of year for experiencing the beauty of Central Oregon. The air is clear, the mountains still gleam with white snow and roads have minimal dust factor. Add to that great lodging rates and you have the perfect opportunity to enjoy Bend.
Average daily temps range between 50-70 degrees with temperatures dipping slightly on Sunday as you head up into the Cascade Mountain range. The team at Breakaway Promotions looks forward to offering outstanding support both during your ride and after with great aid stations, mechanical support, food and beverages.
The Cascade Gravel Grinder is an omnium formatted event. This allows riders to race/ride one, two or all three days. Prizes and scoring will be setup for each day’s ride. Prize money and overall winner’s jerseys will be given to the overall omnium winners.

Merchandise goes to the top three for each of these categories in each of the distances for each day.
Prize money goes to the top three in each category for the Big Grinder and Small Grinder Omnium.
* Masters category is defined as anyone 45 years of age or older on race day.
The Cascade Gravel Grinder is made up of three separate rides that each has points awarded to the top 20 riders in each category. Friday’s time trial will be worth half the point value that Saturday and Sunday will have. The rider with the overall highest points from the event will be declared the winner. Since this is an omnium you do NOT have to complete all three rides however the more rides you do the more points you will receive if you place in the top 20 each day. Tie breakers on points will be determined by who has the highest finishing place on Sunday’s race as that is the most challenging. Cash prizes will be awarded for the overall omnium for the Big Grinder and merchandise prizes for each day’s race and overall for the Small Grinder. Cash prize purse will total $3000. Points are not interchangeable between the Small Grinder and Big Grinder categories. Awards are at 3pm on Sunday at Village Green City Park.
Sunday Ride Celebration
We will have a large party and awards ceremony after Sunday’s ride located at Village Green City Park. Bring your appetite as Spin Catering will be providing everyone an awesome lunch. We will have music, beer garden, and games on hand to keep you in entertained.

Day 1 - April 26
Start Time: First rider off at 5pm

Total Elevation 216 Feet
Description: This classic gravel road is located just west of Bend, Oregon. The course will take riders along a winding, twisting gravel road through pine forests and over Tumalo Creek. The time trial will allow riders to see who came out of winter fit and ready to go. No aero bars or equipment are allowed. This is Eddy Merckx style racing.
Riders will park at William E Miller Elementary School and roll up to the start line at Skyliner and BS Logging Road. This is a point to point TT and once completed riders will take Shevlin and Mt. Washington Roads back to the event parking area at William E Miller Elementary School. No parking at the start! Suggested gearing is 11-28 with only one small climb at mile 2.1.

Day 2 - April 27
Bust Your Butte
Description: This fast rolling course will take riders through the high desert scenery of eastern Oregon. Junipers, sagebrush, and jack rabbits will be in abundance. Climbs are low angle and fast. Depending on the snow pack and moisture in the spring the roads could be a little sandy. While rolling through this open country riders will be treated to tremendous views of the Cascade Mountain Range from Mt. Hood to the North to Mt. Bachelor in the south. There will be three aid stations on the course to help with refueling.
Parking: Parking will be located at a gravel pit 1.5m south of Bessie Butte Trailhead on FS Rd 1810 (Google Map is to Bessie Butte Trailhead- signs will be posted from there)

Day 3 - April 28
Description: Saving the toughest for last the Three Creeks Gravel Grinder is big on challenge and elevation. With nearly 6000 feet of climbing for the Big Grinder the ride is sure to send competitors home with sour legs. The course starts at Village Green Park in the quaint town of Sisters and first skirts along the Cascade foothills before getting real and heading straight up into the mountain range. Huge, up close, breath taking views around every corner will help to numb the pain and suffering. Well stocked aid stations along the route will help fuel riders on to the finish back at Village Green Park were music, great food, and beer garden await. Bring your climbing legs and strong resolve for this final day.
Parking: Parking will be located at Village Green City Park on the south side of Sisters. The address is 301 South Elm Street, Sisters, OR 97759. Parking is limited so please be respectful of the amount of space you use both in the park and the surrounding neighborhood.

We have three packet pickup locations available for riders. If you plan to race the entire omnium you must pick up your packet on Friday at Sagebrush Cycles between 1pm-4pm.

This ride is being chip timed. Results will be posted to the website immediately. Use your smart phone to check and see how you did. Timing chips are on bands that must be worn around your ankle (you can choose which one). We will have starting timing mat, and intermediate timing points along the route to assure no one cuts the course. Look for a series of cones and a mat when out on course. The finish timing mats will be located at the end of the final gravel section and NOT back at were staging and parking was located. Make sure you roll over the timing mat so we can get your official time. You will also be given a bib number to wear on your right side. Please ride respectfully back to the staging area upon completing your ride. That section is not a race! All timing chips must be returned at the timing finish mat location.
